São Bento vs Campanhã Porto: Which Station to Choose?

Transfer guide infographic showing trains, metro lines, and buses connecting Porto Campanhã and Porto São Bento.

São Bento and Campanhã are Porto's two major railway stations, but they serve very different purposes depending on where you are traveling:

1. Campanhã Station (Estação de Campanhã) — The Main Intercity Hub

  • Best For: Long-distance and high-speed trains arriving from or departing to cities across Portugal (e.g., Lisbon, Faro, Coimbra) and international routes.
  • Location: Situated on the eastern edge of Porto, slightly outside the historic center.
  • Function: Serves as Porto's main transportation interchange, connecting long-distance trains, regional lines, metro lines, and STCP buses (like Line 207).

2. São Bento Station (Estação de São Bento) — The Historic Downtown Terminal

  • Best For: Regional and suburban lines (e.g., Guimarães, Braga, Aveiro, and the Douro Valley) and easy access to top city sights.
  • Location: Located directly in the historic center (Baixa), just a short walk from Porto Cathedral, Clérigos Tower, and the Ribeira district.
  • Attraction: A world-famous historic site renowned for its stunning entrance hall decorated with nearly 20,000 blue-and-white azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history.

Which Station Should You Use?

  • Arriving from Lisbon or Southern Portugal: Your train will arrive at Campanhã. From there, you can catch a quick 4-to-5-minute connecting suburban train (usually free with your long-distance train ticket) straight into São Bento to land in the heart of downtown.
  • Taking Day Trips (Douro Valley, Guimarães, Braga): Depart directly from São Bento for maximum convenience.
