Porto on a Budget:
A Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Circuit to the Beach, River & Wine Cellars
Don't worry about getting lost.
This might look like three different buses, but it's really just one simple loop. Spend five minutes reading through this card before you set off, and you'll know exactly where to get on, where to change buses, and where to get off — no local experience needed, and no way to end up stranded.
The "All-in-One" Porto & Cellars Loop
This circuit links three STCP bus lines into one easy loop — and you're free to hop on and off at any stop along the way, not just follow it start to finish.
You start in Bolhão, right in the heart of downtown Porto. From here, take Bus 502 heading toward the sea. It takes you out to Castelo do Queijo, on the Atlantic coast — this is where you change buses.
At Castelo do Queijo, switch to Bus 500. This line follows the coastline and then turns inland along the Douro River, bringing you all the way to São Bento, Porto's historic train station in the old town.
At São Bento, switch to Bus 901. This bus crosses the river and takes you to Cais de Gaia, the riverside promenade in Vila Nova de Gaia — home to the famous port wine cellars.
Since all three are regular city buses, you can get off anywhere along the way to explore, then simply catch the next bus in the same direction to continue the loop.
Practical Tips for Visitors
How hopping works:
You're not locked into riding straight through — feel free to get off at any landmark along the way. Fancy two hours at Serralves or an afternoon at SEA LIFE Porto? Just step off, explore, and catch the next scheduled bus heading the same direction to pick up where you left off.
Fare efficiency:
A single validated Andante ticket covers any transfers you make within its time limit — typically one hour for the Z4 zone — so switching between Bus 502, 500, and 901 within that window often costs nothing extra. If you're planning a full day of hopping on and off, an Andante Tour Card is usually the simpler choice: it gives you unlimited rides all day, so you don't need to watch the clock between transfers.
