Don't be afraid of the Funchal airport runway!
Funchal Airport is a showcase project for the island and the region. The first runway on the island of Madeira opened in 1964, but was too short for many modern aircraft. After an extensive renovation, the new Funchal Airport now has a runway of 2,781 meters and offers all medium-haul aircraft classes sufficient space for take-off and landing. This meant that the airport's capacity increased continuously to 3.5 million passengers per year. The new airport in Madeira is an important economic factor for the island and the region because it connects Madeira with the rest of the world and thus enables tourism on the island to continue to grow. The alternative airport for Funchal Airport (in case of very bad weather and wind conditions) is Porto Santo Airport , only 50 km away as the crow flies.

There are two airports in the Madeira region : the airport in Funchal and the airport on the nearby island of Porto Santo . It is approximately 60 km away. Both airports in the Madeira region are regularly served by European airlines, with Funchal airport being the larger of the two. If the airport in Funchal cannot be flown to due to poor weather conditions, the aircraft will be diverted to Porto Santo.

Transfer to Madeira Airport by Aerobus
The Aerobus from the SAM bus company is a cheap and comfortable way to get from Funchal to the airport. The bus runs every hour and costs 5 euros each way (return 8 euros).
The bus starts at Praia Formosa, then travels along the coastal road to the port or center of Funchal and then along the highway to the airport. Then it goes in reverse order from the airport back to Praia Formosa. The journey takes approx. 1 hour.

Prices to Funchal: Regardless of the destination, the journey from the airport starts with a basic price of €4.00, with a 20% surcharge for journeys between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., as well as on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. An additional fee of €1.50 is also charged for the transport of luggage or animals.
Price: In total you have to expect travel costs of around 25 euros from the airport to Funchal.
