Douro by train

The most beautiful train journey in Portugal

The Douro River rises in Spain and, after a long journey through the Douro Valley in Portugal, flows into the sea near the city of Porto. As it makes its way through the valley, the train ride offers breathtaking views of the river, surrounding vineyards and beautiful countryside. You have the choice between a regional train and a historic steam train. The steam railway is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the region in a relaxed and unforgettable way.

A train ride along the river is a great day trip not to be missed. It is also possible to combine this train trip with a river trip.

The railway line along the Douro Valley starts in Porto and goes up the Douro River to the town of Pocinho. It is especially the section from Peso da Régua to Tua that makes it one of the most beautiful and popular train journeys in Portugal.

You have two options to choose from (depending on time and budget): the entire route from Porto to Pocinho with a normal regional train or just the journey along the particularly beautiful section from Regua to Tua with the historic steam locomotive.

With the steam train through the Douro Valley: an unforgettable day trip

The historic railway runs between Regua and Tua from June to October.

The historic train leaves the town of Peso da Régua in the afternoon around 3:30 p.m. and arrives in Tua at 4:40 p.m. The return journey to Régua starts at around 5:30 p.m. As I said, the train only runs in the summer months of June to October.

Further information (current prices and departure times) about the historic train can be found at this link:>>> Comboio historico

Important: > The train does not run on all days of the week.

Before you set off on your journey, find out in advance whether the historic train will run on the days you want. You can check the days and also buy tickets online on the Comboios de Portugal
