Central Portuguese Way— Stage 12: Albergaria-a-Velha to Oliveira de Azeméis
Caminho Central Português — Stage 12: Albergaria-a-Velha to Oliveira de Azeméis
Stage 12 Overview Map
Start and end points are exact. The connecting line shows general direction only — it is not the walking trail itself. Click a marker for a Google Maps link.
Leaving Albergaria-a-Velha from the town hall square, past the Boa Vista palace, the Camino slips quickly into forest — eucalyptus and pine tracks that carry pilgrims to Albergaria-a-Nova and on to Branca. It's an easy, shaded stretch, and one of the more pleasant forest walks on this part of the Camino.
The route continues to Pinheiro da Bemposta — a parish with its own small charter dating back to 1514 — before reaching the historic centre of Bemposta itself, consistently singled out by pilgrims as one of the prettiest village cores on this stage. From here it's a shorter final push into Oliveira de Azeméis.
Oliveira de Azeméis rewards the walk with real variety: a striking modern bank building designed by Pritzker-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira near the town hall, a Roman milestone standing in the central square (relocated from the nearby village of Úl), and the Casa Museu Regional, housed in an 1844 building that once served as the town's courthouse.
Sights en route
Pilgrim lodging
Oliveira de Azeméis itself has no dedicated municipal albergue. The nearest pilgrim-specific options sit just before town: a private albergue at the entrance to Albergaria-a-Nova, and the newer Moinho Garcia hostel in Pinheiro da Bemposta, about 6 km before the stage finish.
Towns You'll Pass Through
Albergaria-a-Nova
Albergaria-a-Nova, "the new Albergaria," sits about 6.5 km into the stage along the shaded forest track out of Albergaria-a-Velha. It's a quiet village with a private pilgrim albergue right at its entrance — a sensible early stop for anyone who prefers a shorter first half of the day.
Pinheiro da Bemposta
Pinheiro da Bemposta carries its own small charter dating to 1514, and its name — "well-positioned," roughly — comes from its airy, elevated spot with wide views over the surrounding countryside. A newer hostel here, Moinho Garcia, has become a popular stop for pilgrims timing a shorter day.
Oliveira de Azeméis (end of Stage 12)
Oliveira de Azeméis, a town of around 20,000, mixes genuine historic interest with contemporary design — a Roman milestone stands in its central square alongside a striking bank building by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The Igreja Matriz, dedicated to São Miguel, holds a Joanino-style gilded altarpiece, and the 1844 Casa Museu Regional preserves the town's local history and customs.
